Power of Physics?

This might be old news but anyway, just saw a type of torchlight that doesn't require batteries. The mechanism is based on Faraday's law of electro-magnetic induction.

What happens is when you shake the torchlight vigorously, a powerful magnet moves along the central axis of a copper coil. The induced current allows a capacitor to store electric energy and power up the torch's LEDs, since LEDS consume much less power than conventional bulbs. Damned impressed at the simplicity of this idea... I might consider trying to DIY this project, homemade 'milkshake' torchlight anyone?

Any electrical engineer keen to join me? Wahaha!

On hindsight, maybe not.

Priceless quotes #2

"忍无可忍,就拿出心中刀,插向仇恨心!"
LCP Tan Ch** H*ng

----------------------------------

If you could map out a person's personality, his soul, I wonder how would one divide it into basic elements ala Periodic Table in chemistry.

As I grew older, I figured out some of my personality traits. I remember in P4, this boy called Desmond gave me a real big slap on my back with his palms for no apparent reason. He did it in the school bus with perhaps all his strength. I managed to feel very angry just before I burst into tears. I recall after I told my then 'best friend' Andrew who was a TKD student, he told me he gave Desmond a reverse thrust kick to his head the next day. Well it sounds frickin naive but i believed him, anyway I didn't see Desmond around so couldn't be bothered with that asswipe anyway..

Then I went into NS, it really was a culture shock. I remember during PC interview, my PC said I seemed like one of the 'zai kia(s)' meaning I was one of the 'finer recruits' if I may say so. He asked me if I had any grievances to bring up, I still recall he was like totally methodological (wait a minute is there such a word?) about asking it..
2WO Sim: Lee, any family problem?
Me: No sir.
2WO Sim: Money problem?
Me: No sir.
2WO Sim: Got girlfriend?
Me: No sir.
2WO Sim (muttering): No girlfriend problem *while writing down on my interview booklet*
Me: Actually sir...
2WO Sim: Ya..? (is that dulan-ness I sense in his tone?)
Me: Sir, actually I a bit of culture shock, in school and at home, whole life never heard so many lan jiao, chao chee bye, kan nin na compared to 1st day in BMTC..
2WO Sim: Lee..(chuckling) you have to get used to it, this is the real world lah.. don't believe next time you go out to work it will be the same. Don't take it too seriously..
Me: Yes sir.

Thinking back, I am also confused man. My family upbringing was moderately strict, Buddhist family although we believed strongly in certain Confucius' (Confucian? Confusion?) values such as filial piety etc etc.. Never had much conflict at home, at most minor squibbles between us siblings etc. Never really had a fight, or real quarrel with other friends or classmates. People said I took after my dad, which I thought was a compliment since he seemed always so cool headed and practical. Everything he said made sense to me, more often because it was logic at work. My "ECU" was slowly tuned to his "throttle inputs" becoming more and more familiarised with him and his expectations and values.

Patience and tolerance, he taught me, was much of a desired virtue to possess. Till today, many friends around me believe I have quite a high tolerance level. However I am slowly starting to feel that tolerance level dipping, everytime I get angry at something, everytime I make mistakes and I have to take the blame. I suppose I have a huge phobia of failure and making mistakes, like when I was still around 12 and I started complaining to my dad that I was tired or something like that. That was in the coffeeshop and he gave me a slap right there and then.

Perhaps from then on, I absolutely resented the feeling of embarrassment and whatever other emotions and feelings that might lead or arise from that. I just quietly listened when others lectured me but when their backs turned, I cursed them and their whole families, either I asked for death to take them swiftly or I would just hurl vulgarities in my mind, elementary stuff like "fuck off from my world and I hope you die fucker". It served somehow as a way to let off steam although it was all inside of me. I only started rebutting my siblings during secondary school, among friends I don't recall any real bad incident. Perhaps there hasn't been a chance for this to take place anyway.

As I became an adult, I absolutely resented being lectured by someone else. I just couldn't take it unless it was absolutely logical and I admitted it was my own fault. The bottom line was that if somehow someone made fun of me, I would feel terrible, my stomach would heat up and my chest would get really tight and I can really feel adrenalin, coursing through my body. It was my brain, releasing all the proper hormones to get ready for a fight, to bash the other fucker who had offended her master if I may refer to the brain as a female organism. This feeling has intensified over time, even as I type I can feel perfectly what I am describing now.

ST said that the biggest sin of us Singaporeans was Anger (Wrath) and I actually am quite surprised that I am somehow quite a frequent committer of this sin. In fact, doesn't this seem like a movie? 'Anger management' and I'm Adam Sandler. They say, it isn't the constant lava-gushing volcanoes that are dangerous, rather it is the dormant ones that wreak havoc occasionally.

Come to think of it, maybe a fight during younger days might have been beneficial.

Anyway for a summary..
1. I am extremely phobic about being 'excluded' (non-acceptance) or made fun of. I'm sure I will fly into a rage if that happens.
2. I am extremely phobic of embarrassment.
3. I am extremely phobic of failure.
4. I lack discipline.
5. I need to find an avenue to really vent my anger or find a shrink.

PS: Thanks PC for sending me that song, it was highly therapeutic.

A time to kill

Kill off Kronecker deltas, orthonormal scalar products and what else there is in quantum mechanics.

Think I've blogged about this before but I'll just blog about this again, when you gift somebody a 'want' instead of a need, sooner or later it will turn into a necessity for him. For me, that 'gift' was the use of a car, and occasionally when I find that I don't have access to it, I get very weary and lazy. Damned, what I need is an army lifestyle right now, minus the cold water shower though.

Recently I saw in ST, the greatest sin most people have committed is anger. For me it would have to be sloth! I'm so frickin lazy these days, waking up late and easily distracted. Maybe a cattle prod would do me good... electrocuting me out my dreamland every morning at 0700 hours..

Now that the 'atenza' emblem is here, will have to meet up with the forum guys to collect my stuff! Oh and did I mention I'm contemplating taking up class 2b lessons in the coming holidays, kena poison from Jingkai already zz. Somemore he pillioned me home last night, brrr it sure was cold man with cold rain drizzling down.

This will be it for now, back to killing..

How to spend $$..

Just saw this off MCS and quite perturbed.

See this!

Now, would you spend the amount of money like him on your own vehicle? I'm just a little curious to see who would actually be willing to fork out that kind of money to mod your ride.

Not to mention, I'm sure at least 3/4 of the mods featured are cosmetic modifications only..

Bo liao..

Read BFSW's blog and subsequently went to read XX's blog. Hehe, ah lian snatches cab from the number 1 blogger in SG for no apparent reason. (Oops, number 1 bloggr or snatch cab for no apparent reason?)

Anyway, I managed to read most of the forum posts inside OGK forums because I think at that time the forum's bandwidth still allowed for unregistered people to view all the posts inside. I dunno man, save for a few, it seems like all the people in the forum are brainless.. I shan't continue.. LOL.

I never knew that in Singapore, life can be so drama even online.. well if XX's claim is valid then actually it wouldn't surprise me. Just a couple of days ago, I went to the Esplanade to watch the 'Mosaic music festival', some jazz band was giving a live performance. Some people who ate glassplexin or optical fibre for lunch stood right in front of us and a whole crowd behind. Happily jiving to the music oblivious to perhaps 20 or 30 odd pissed off people. Perhaps they forgot they were wearing opaque clothes, stupid cockanadens. The above mentioned cock-sters include ang-mors as well, nnb whoever said only locals were inconsiderate? At one point of time felt like shouting 'OEI' a-la-Jianwei style (NH inside joke) but decided at a public performance it wouldn't be too gracious either. Too bad I didn't bring my metal water bottle, which had a 'peace' insignia inscribed on it. JK should know better.. hehe

Where was I? Oh yeah for a summary of the happenings in XX's oh-so-drama blog, I suppose you guessed it. Its in this entry's title.

Taking the first step..

The first step, isn't it often that the first step is always the most important? I have to admit many a time I have failed to take the first step and I'm still learning to try to take it whenever I can. Like joining JK for Tumkur, somehow I declined. Like going for consultations, somehow I never go. Like going for rock climbing sub club, even somehow that didn't materialise. Sigh..

Is there something wrong with me? Even Yilin who mugs all day long is in CBLC.. Ivan is in Arts Club, Beng is in CHESS, Henry even though he isn't the most social type but he plays table tennis with his friends over there. Zeff is involved in Science Club's publications, JK needless to say, project Tumkur under his leadership, I already respect his balls to even try leading something. Why am I not taking a step forward? I'm not stepping backwards but I'm going to have zero displacement. I haven't even experienced hall life yet, which many people including my Geog lecturer say that it is part and parcel of University life and you wouldn't have experienced University life if you have not experienced campus life.

At most, I go for tennis with Beng and I'm grateful for that. At most I go for soccer with the NH guys and I'm lucky to be in such a closely bonded (sounds familiar?) bunch of friends. At most, the bi-weekly jog with PC Lee and yeah I'm really very grateful for finding such a close friend from NS days. I'm probably rank A in his heart while he's just rank B, I guess I do take friends for granted at times, don't I?

I look at my elder sis, school basketball team in BPGHS, Health & Fitness club in NJ, then NTU I think she stayed at hall for at least 2 semesters, was active in Talentime's committee, and did well in her studies in the end. Think the lowest grade she got was B and she got a 2nd upper class honours. Which means she's just below the Chinamen/SG elites.

Looking at my younger sis, the other extreme, dabbled in piano, organ and the guitar and soon lost interest one after another. Joined band in RV and literally never looked back, continued to be part of RV's alumni band after joining JJ's band as well and was part of the West Zone's band as well. Sometimes she comes home after my parents are asleep, and out of the door before they are awake. Which of course led to the detriment of her acadamia during JC1, flunked a couple of subjects with the combination of Art/Econs/Chemistry/Maths. Strangely enough she dropped Chemistry which in my opinion as a weak Chemistry student, is a freefrag. Nevermind, so after repeated warnings and chidings from my parents she still continues to be very active in band concerts and performances so now her A level results are out. Needless to say it wasn't very good except for Art which she nailed with a distinction.

I suppose our conservative family has really looked down on her "art work" and she has really proved all of us wrong but in the end, she has really failed where it really mattered (read: full A-level cert). Maybe she isn't really cut out for the standard 'maths/science' path like I wasn't really cut out for Physics. I'm sure her resume will be outstanding though for all the CCA stuff she was involved in.

Back to me, table tennis in primary school, which was enjoyable. Continued it in secondary school, training wasn't provided so it was terribly boring. Joined computer club hoping it would be fun and it was slightly better with students taking more initiative rather than teachers. Highlight was NDP 96 where we were forcefully drafted into Dance Society's training which I think was for the better of me. JJC, nothing much except joining the pathetically existing Health and fitness club. NS, nothing much, no comment but overall it was a good experience. NUS, made friends at O-week and really haven't done anything outstanding yet except to dabao 2 modules.

Strangely, at this point of the semester there still seems to be hope. Perhaps its because I know its tough to be failed for my 2 arts modules (Who ever fails arts essay-based modules?) unless you skipped all lectures and tutorials. Maybe its because I have stunned a white board marker at 2nd year lab, scribbling equation after equation whenever I'm free. Maybe its really because I am desperate now, really desperate enough to decide that I need help for my maths module, and my E&M module for good measure. So much that I'm quite sure I have taken half a step forward already, at least towards acadamia redemption. Hell, maybe its just that I'm aiming to scrape through Uni life, rather than to come out better equipped to face the world.

Haven't blogged like this in a while, sure feels weird but hopefully my other half-step will follow up, for my own good.

Of whiteheads and blacking out...

Well actually for quite some time now I have been visibly irritated by a whitehead residing on my right eyelid so after twitching around in school the whole day I decided it had to go.

Step 1: Wash your face to make your skin as _____ as possible. (clean? not-oily?)
Step 2: Proceed to scratch and irritate the site of the whitehead.
Step 3: Pinch the general area with thumb and index finger so that the skin above the whitehead suffers even more damage.
Step 4: Repeat steps 2 & 3 (ouch...)
Step 5: Upon skin breakage remove the whitehead by gently squeezing.
Step 6: Sob uncontrollably before passing out on the toilet floor.

Ok step 6 was irrelevant.. haha!

Furget about fur.. *viewer discretion advised*

Saw this off MCS and its on Ivan's blog as well.

Super gross and unfeeling, and like Ren Xian Qi and Zhou Hua Jian have said on animal planet, "When the buying stops, the killing can too.."

The beautiful solution

Solution 1 is not really the best solution but nevertheless if it was somehow used, could possibly allow all the dwarves to be set free by the 2nd day in the worst case scenario.

Two dwarves start off by falling in the parade square. A third dwarf takes a look at them and if they are the same, he falls in at the side. If they are different, he falls in between them. Hence he always separates the 2 groups of dwarves, dotted and undotted. Going by this logic, the dwarves do not need to communicate but it does require the first few dwarves to take some initiative. So extending this argument, by the time the last dwarf falls in, there are 2 clear cut groups and he falls in between the 2 groups and he takes a 50% chance by putting up his hand. If it is wrong, he will leave his hand down on day 2 and the dwarves will be set free!

Smart solution!

Solution 2 is the 'zai' solution as Henry and I both agree, it took our brains a bit of warming up to understand it at first! Even now I also a bit blur so I shall just copy and paste the email haha!

Ok, the one dotted dwarf case is trivial:

The dotted dwarf himself sees no other dotted dwarf, and realized that he
must be the one, so he raised his hand.

Two dotted dwarves case:

[from a dotted dwarf eyes] he sees one dotted dwarf in the group. But that
dotted dwarf is NOT raising his hand as in case 1! Why didn't he raise his
hand when it seems that he is the only dotted dwarf?

So, there must be one more dotted dwarf than what he actually sees. Since
he can see everyone except himself, the "one more dotted dwarf" must be
himself.

[from non-potted dwarves point of view] they saw two dotted dwarves. They
also suspect that they themselves are dotted. So they observe the two
dotted dwarves. If there ARE REALLY TWO dotted dwarves, then, by day 2,
those two dwarves will put up their hand. Case closed.

(Stepping immediately to a sample case)

OK, I am a dwarf. I see 2 dotted dwarves. I assume that I am not dotted
(I don't know whether I am really dotted or not). So, I asumme that the 2
dotted dwarves that I saw are really the total number of dwarves. So I
wait 2 days. By right, If there really 2 dotted dwarves in the group, they
will know that by day 2, from previous argument.

If by day 2, the two dwarves that I saw really raise their hand, and the
king release us, then I know that the are really 2 dwarves in the group.

But what if the 2 dwarves didn't put up their hands? WTF are they doing?
Assuming they are not blur, the only possiblity is that there are actually
more than 2 dwarves!! But I see only 2, so I must be the third.

At the same time the non-dotted dwarf always sees ALL the three dotted
dwarves.

So, a dotted dwarf himself will always be the one who realized that he is
dotted, if by day r, the r dotted dwarves he sees did not raise their
hands. They are waiting for him! (Each dotted dwarf has this view-point
that the remaining dotted dwarves are waiting for him by the end of day r
if they are not released).

Are you dumb??

Hehe so how is it? Have you all got the solutions yet? So far I suppose only JK, me and Henry know the solutions as well as J but she doesn't seem to be very interested in the puzzle. :(

Anyway just went to KTV with J and her bro's friends and sang a lot of oldies. Think along the lines of "ah li shan de gu niang" and ... another one that goes.. "chang jiang chang qian li..." Oh man.. ok they were yesteryear's hits but.. er.. haha.
Anyway due to the low frequency of KTV visits my voice has deteriorated tremendously (although it never was anything to shout about in the first place..) and almost went off key a few times. Phew, when I went off key I wasn't singing with the mike and J glared at me for a moment.. oops! LOL

Went to the MCS gathering and wah.. really damned intimidating.. so many people and so many cars. I should have taken a few pics but it was quite dark already. So maybe another time, managed to meet my secondary school friend there too!

Enjoy your mid term break guys, I'll do some catching up!! Academic catch up I mean :)
